Hey, I’m Gavin.

I’m an M.S. Analytics candidate at Georgia Tech and a graduate of UNC Charlotte, where I earned my B.S. in Data Science.

I’m drawn to problems where there isn’t an obvious answer or a perfectly defined set of instructions. Whether I’m building an operational system, working through a forecasting problem, or trying to improve an existing process, I enjoy figuring out how the pieces fit together and finding a solution that actually works in practice.

That has taken me in some directions I probably would not have predicted when I first started studying data science. I’ve worked on demand forecasting with The Home Depot, built and continue to administer a production system supporting a regional soccer league, and worked in operations and referee development with Carolina Referee Organization.

Outside of analytics, a huge part of my life is soccer officiating.

Education & Analytics

I earned my B.S. in Data Science from UNC Charlotte in 2024, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.80 GPA. I’m currently pursuing my M.S. in Analytics at Georgia Tech, with an expected graduation in December 2026.

My graduate work has given me the opportunity to explore statistical modeling, machine learning, forecasting, simulation, and other approaches to data-driven decision-making. I’m particularly comfortable working in Python, and I’ve found that I enjoy technical work most when it is connected to a real problem rather than existing purely as an academic exercise.

That became especially clear through my industry practicum with The Home Depot and through building the UPSL operations platform. Both required more than getting a model or piece of software to work—they required understanding what people actually needed from it.

Soccer

Soccer officiating started as something I thought I might enjoy. It turned into one of the defining pursuits of my life.

I began refereeing in 2020 and have since officiated more than 1,500 matches across youth, collegiate, semi-professional, and professional-preseason competition. I earned promotion to U.S. Soccer Regional Referee in 2024 and also officiate NCAA soccer.

Along the way, I’ve had opportunities to work MLS preseason competition, USL League Two and USL W League playoff matches, collegiate postseason games, national youth competition, and numerous state and regional events.

The part I value most, though, is the challenge of the job itself. Refereeing requires making consequential decisions quickly, communicating clearly when people disagree with you, working as part of a crew, and maintaining control when a match becomes difficult. There is always another game, another situation, and something else to improve.

I was named the North Carolina Young Referee of the Year (Male) in 2021, but some of the experiences I’m proudest of have come in the years since as I’ve continued progressing through higher levels of the game.

Outside of Work

When I’m not working with data or standing on a soccer field, music is probably the next easiest way to find me.

I grew up in a very musical family and have played guitar since I was nine. I also play piano and a little mandolin, and I enjoy listening to, playing, and writing music.

I’m also the kind of person who tends to have a project going. I enjoy building things, experimenting with technology, traveling, and finding new problems to disappear into for a while.

At the center of all of it is my family, who have been an enormous part of my life and have supported just about every strange direction my interests have taken me.
